New Zealand Visa & Passport Photos

Printed Requirements

Below is an outline of New Zealand Passport Photo Requirements.

  • Submitted passport and visa photos should be less than 6 months old
  • You must be facing square on and looking straight at the camera
  • No hat, head band or head covering except for medical or religious reasons.
  • Facial features must be clearly shown
  • Sunglasses are not allowed in New Zealand Passport and Visa Photos
  • Tinted prescription glasses may be worn as long as the eyes are still visible
  • There must be no light reflection on the glasses.
  • Digital manipulation of passport photos is not allowed
  • A plain, light coloured background is required of passport photos (not white)
  • Background is normally light gray or blue is specified if you have fair hair
  • No background shadow for New Zealand Passport and Visa photos
  • Photos must be high quality colour showing natural skin tones
  • Black and white photos are not acceptable
  • The photos must be printed on high quality photographic paper
  • Ink jet printing is not allowed
  • Thermal printing is not accepted either for New Zealand Passport photos
  • Photos must a neutral expression with the mouth closed
  • Your eyes must be open and clearly visible in the passport photo
  • No hair across the face or eyes is allowed in New Zealand passport photos
  • Overall size must be 45mm height x 35mm width
  • Head size between 32 to 36mm

Online Digital Passport Applications

  • File type: Jpg or Jpeg
  • File size: Greater than 500kb and less than 10MB
  • Minimum 900 pixels wide x 1200 pixels high
  • Maximum 4500 pixels wide x 6000 pixels high
  • Full colour
  • Photo must be less than 6 months old
  • Head centred with a clear gap around the sides and top of head, including hair
  • Maximum size of head, including hair, must be 75% of the photo
  • True image must not be altered in any way
  • In focus, with no red-eye and no reflected light on the face
  • The background must be plain and light coloured
  • Strong contrast between image and background
  • No shadows
  • Head straight to the camera
  • Eyes open, mouth closed
  • Neutral expression, not smiling or frowning
  • No hair across your face or eyes as eyes must be clearly visible
  • No head bands, or head coverings
  • Eyes must be clearly showing through glasses, with no reflection
  • No glasses with heavy-rimmed frames
  • No sunglasses, or glasses with tinted lenses that obscure your eyes
